JILL GEFEN

As an artist, I create sculptural pieces that allow the viewer to experience ordinary objects in an uncommon way. My work explores the geometry and beauty inherent in chicken wire fencing, rice paper, metal piping, metal wire, and ordinary hardware.

Hardware stores are my art stores. Using different mediums, I create tension and line without paint. The metal allows me to work on different planes and changes with light and perspective. I work instinctively and organically. I react to the objects and the physical limitations they present and challenge myself to create something out of nothing.

My work is inspired by the art of Ruth Asawa and Lee Bontecou.

After studying architecture at UC Berkeley, Jill attended Art Center College of Design and graduated with a BFA in Advertising Design. She worked in advertising agencies as an art director in New York and Los Angeles and was a marketing/creative director for almost 20 years. From 2010 - 2020, sheworked with artist Tom Wudl who served as a mentor and teacher.
