JENNIFER DIENER

After a lifetime of sketching, I decided to explore art making more intentionally.  I took drawing and painting lessons from Jill Douglas, Gary Paller, Ken Bracken, and others on staff at Brentwood Art Center in 2015.  In 2017 I was fortunate to be accepted into Tom Wudl’s studio and was subsequently invited to join the StudioEleven Artists group.

Thanks to Wudl’s profound gifts as an artist and deep knowledge of art history, I found inspiration in the Transcendentalists, and the work of 20th century women artists working in abstraction. I have been pre-occupied with squares and circles, as is exemplified in “Homage to Sophie Taueber Arp”, with its bold solid colors in dense oil. This year I began to use colored pencils on paper, first as an antidote to the intensity and time demands of oil, but then to explore their lambent expressive qualities of softness, vibration, and radiance. I am interested in archetypal images and the expressive relationships of color.
