JOAn GIAMMARCO

Painting allows me to communicate in a visual way, what I am unable to express in words. Coming from a background of film and theatre, storytelling has always played an important role in my work and painting offers another language to convey feelings, thoughts and experiences, both real and imagined. I have been fortunate to live and work in other countries for extended periods of time and I am often affected by the unique color of each place which I try to capture in my paintings. I’ve been very inspired by works of Frank Bowling, Mark Rothko, Henri Matisse, Helen Frankenthaler and the simple beauty of cave paintings. These paintings, for me, are my attempts to leave my handprints on the walls of the cave.

Joan Giammarco was born and raised in Canada where her love of film and theater led her to the BFA program at York University in Toronto. She then moved to Los Angeles and began working in film post-production in Los Angeles and in Europe. She is also a writer and actress. She studied painting with Tom Wudl and figure drawing with Malaika Zweig Latty.
