I am a Los Angeles-based textile artist, creates vibrant and dynamic textiles, sculptures, and installations that explore the convergence of color, texture, and pattern. My artwork delves into the themes of nostalgia, memory, and the passage of time, resulting in complex, multilayered woven pieces. My' process-based practice began when I learned to sew from my grandmothers, and this traditional textile education is evident in much of my work. Despite utilizing conventional techniques such as crocheting, weaving, knitting, and coiling, I deviate from the norm by incorporating unorthodox materials, including photographs, metal wire, found objects, and single-use plastic, which lends unpredictability to her art.

My current work revolves around the contrast between the durability of certain materials and the fragility of others, and this dichotomy is a recurring theme in my art. My latest body of work, which integrates discarded construction materials with fiber elements, occupies a space between textile and sculpture, further expanding the boundaries of my practice. Each series of the work is unique, and the incorporation of unexpected materials makes each piece unpredictable and intriguing.

Elise Vazelakis earned a BS from San Diego State University and an MFA from California State University Long Beach.
